What is a Syringe driver?
Since we have started this fundraising we have been asked many times “What is a Syringe Driver?”
Unless you or someone you know and love needs one you probably wouldn’t know. We didn’t!
In short a syringe driver is a device used in palliative care. It is a box that is attached to the patient by a needle, through which drugs can be administered giving a constant flow of pain relief. Without these devices patients have to wait for a nurse to attend to administer countless injections every time they are in pain. This causes distress to the patient and their family. It means a lot of waiting about when time is crucial for someone in pain. These devices can also help people remain at home instead of needing to go into hospital or a hospice in their final days as their pain can be successfully managed.
Why are we fundraising?
This is a cause close to our hearts as we have seen first-hand the suffering of such a patient who was in desperate need during the final stages of a terminal battle with cancer and there were none available. He had to wait 24 hours before he got one…he was lucky…some people never get them…
Our aim at NGNPUK is to raise funds to supply more drivers into the communities around these areas so that people can have their pain successfully managed in their homes when the time comes. It’s not until you are in the situation that you learn they are not always readily available, by that time it’s too late.
We assumed the people we loved and cared for would have managed pain relief when the time came but we were wrong.
Please help us by donating or simply spreading the word.
Many Thanks NGNPUK
